TETRAPOND PFX FILTERS
Sterlet Sticks

The TetraPond PFX filter range provides a selection of simple to use pressurised pond filters for maintaining excellent water clarity and quality. Available in three different sizes, and two different models, there is a unit to suit most ponds.

Following a dedicated research program conducted by Tetra's R&D department, it is now clear that not only do sterlets have special environmental needs, but also very different nutritional requirements. In fact, much of the reasons for the difficult in caring for them have probably been down to them receiving the wrong nutrition.

What is a pressure filter?
Unlike ordinary pond filters that rely on gravity to move water through them, pressure filters are sealed and therefore maintain the pressure of water flowing through them. This means they can be placed anywhere between the pond and waterfall, as water can be pushed through them and then on up to the highest point in the system. It is also easier to hide a pressure filter, as it can be buried below the ground.

The TetraPond range of pressure filters have been designed to be efficient yet easy to use. This makes sure your pond is kept in good health, whilst at the same time reducing the time needed to maintain the filter.

Specific features of the PFX range include:
  • Simple back-flush system to reduce and simplify maintenance.
  • High surface area of biological and mechanical filter media, to improve filter efficiency.
  • Incorporated ultraviolet lights (PFX-UV range) to keep pond water crystal clear.
  • Robust, high-quality construction, for peace of mind and reliability.
Back-flush system
In order to keep your pond clear, the PFX filter is highly efficient at trapping solid waste. Unlike ordinary pond filters, the PFX range has a simple, one-touch back-flush facility that makes removing this waste easy.

The system works by reversing the flow in the filter, and ejecting any trapped debris through a waste pipe. This pipe can be run onto the garden as a source of nutrients. Unlike other self-cleaning systems, the TetraPond filters completely reverse the flow, rather than simply squeezing the sponges or only partially reversing it. This makes them far more efficient.

If you use the back-flush facility whenever the flow through the filter drops, it will greatly extend the period between needing to remove and clean the filter media. Simply attach a pipe to the waste fitting, switch the unit to ‘backflush', and run the water to waste until it goes clear. Once finished, you simply switch it back to ‘filter' and remove the waste pipe.

Under normal operation, water flows through sponges to remove solid waste, then through biological media for removing dissolved pollutants, and finally past an ultraviolet light for algae control.
When switched to back-flush, water flows in reverse. It first goes past the ultraviolet light, then through the biological media, and finally through the sponges where it dislodges dirt and removes it from the filter.

Separate biological and mechanical media
Having separate filter material (or ‘media') increases the efficiency of the unit. Foam sponges are used to physically remove solid waste, whilst special biological media provides a home for naturally occurring bacteria that break down dissolved pollutants.

By keeping solid waste away from the biological media, it is allowed to work more effectively as it does not become choked with debris. This equals better water quality for your fish.

Powerful ultraviolet lights (PFX-UV models)
Unlike many filters on the market, the PFX-UV range contains very powerful ultraviolet lights (9W and 18W). This means their efficiency is less vulnerable to changes in flow rate through the unit, or larger pond volumes. The result is crystal clear pond water.

Robust construction
Just like Tetra's pond pumps, the PFX filters are designed to be extremely robust in order to meet the demands of a heavily stocked pond. This makes them reliable and dependable, and will ensure years of continuous operation.

Selecting the right PFX filter for your pond
There are three sizes, and two models. The PFX-UV range come complete with an ultraviolet light for preventing and eradicating green water. To select the most suitable size for your pond, along with the correct TetraPond pump, use the following chart:
